Indiana Slot Proposal in Jeopardy

INDIANA – As reported by the Indianapolis Star: "The chairman of the House committee deciding the fate of using slot machines to fund a new Indianapolis Colts stadium warned Wednesday that he'll let the issue die if bipartisan consensus isn't found.

"State Rep. Robert Alderman, R-Fort Wayne, said 'political intrigue' aimed at the 2006 legislative elections is threatening the continued progress of bills that would add slot machines to two Indiana horse-racing tracks to help fund the new stadium.

"'This is not my issue. I certainly don't live or die on this issue,' he said. 'I will drop the issue in the trash can before I let it become political, I tell you that right now.'

"And if he does take the bill off the table, Alderman said, it won't be revived this session.

"…Peterson had been seeking to put slot machines in Downtown Indianapolis -- a plan that's been declared off the table by both Daniels and House Speaker Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis.

"…The mayor told the committee that unless the stadium is built, Indianapolis would lose the Colts, would be unable to expand the Indiana Convention Center, losing more business, and would lose the chance to regularly host the NCAA Final Four basketball tournaments for men and women…"
