Indiana riverboat crews face job loss

INDIANA – As reported by the Indianapolis Star: "Indiana's riverboat captains have long seen the bad news coming.

"Their jobs and the jobs of their crews on Indiana's nine casino boats -- 11 mariners man the boats 24/7 -- could end as a result of legislation in the Indiana General Assembly.

"The bill, debated last week, would allow slot machines at the state's two horse-racing tracks. But it also includes an amendment that riverboats would no long need a propulsion system. That would make them barges at best and signal the end of the line for the captains.

"…The mariners' growing irrelevance -- their boats haven't cruised in about five years -- seems to parallel Indiana's growing comfort with legalized gambling…"
