Indiana Pull-Tabs Could Fund Kindergarten

INDIANA – As reported by the Herald Bulletin: "Legislation to legalize pull-tab gaming devices at Indiana's two horse racing facilities could fund all-day kindergarten in the state, local legislators say.

"The bill, if passed, is estimated to pull in $87 million for the state and $63 million for counties without horse tracks or off-track betting parlors. Another $27 million would also land in the state's general fund. That money, generated by riverboat casinos, now goes to the horse racing industry. Full-day kindergarten is expected to cost $150 million.

"Pull tabs could generate between $8 million and $12 million for Anderson and Madison County alone, with most of the funds used for economic development efforts, said bill author Rep. Scott Reske, D-37th District. County school systems would receive 20 percent of that revenue, based on student enrollment.

"…HB 1188 will allow pull tabs, a form of gambling, at Hoosier Park and Indiana Downs in Shelby County and off-track betting facilities in Marion and Allen counties…"
