Indiana Pull-Tab Bill Scratched13 February 2004INDIANA – As reported by the Indianapolis Star: "The prospects for electronic pull-tab gambling, seen as a bailout for the state's ailing horse racing industry, died Thursday as Indiana Senate leaders said they did not want to expand gambling. "House Bill 1188 would have allowed 1,000 electronic pull-tab machines at each of the state's horse tracks, in Shelbyville and Anderson. It also would have allowed 1,500 of the machines, which look nearly identical to slot machines, at betting parlors in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. "Senate President Pro Tempore Robert Garton assigned the bill to the Senate's rules committee, a legislative maneuver that often signals the death of House-approved legislation. He said the bill wouldn't get a hearing, so it won't be considered by the full Senate. "…The pull-tab proposal could resurface at the end of the session as an amendment to another bill, but even Sen. Tim Lanane, D-Anderson, the pull-tab bill's Senate sponsor, said that's unlikely. "Word of the bill's demise spread quickly throughout the state's horse racing industry…" |
