Indiana Ordinance Compensates for Casino Impact25 April 2006HAMMOND, Indiana – As reported by the Northwest Indiana Times: "The entire city benefits from taxes on the lakefront casino, but north side neighbors are affected the most by its operations. "Every Hammond district received nearly $3 million in casino money for 2005, after deductions for citywide programs such as the 2 percent property tax cap. "But the City Council is considering a little something extra for 1st District residents who must contend with the traffic congestion, noise and inconvenience associated with the hundreds of thousands of gamblers who pass through their area each month. "…A new ordinance under consideration would create a 'casino impact area' in the district, which would receive an extra $1 million a year in casino revenues. "The money would be used for the purchase of property and the demolition of condemned or dilapidated structures, park improvements, and the general health and well-being of residents…" |
