Indiana officials back pull-tabs

14 January 2008

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana -- As reported by the Indiana Journal Gazette: "Lawmakers in both the House and Senate have filed legislation to allow bars and taverns to offer paper pull tabs and other small-stakes gambling opportunities.

"...And, Bell said, this proposal is not the behemoth of electronic gambling they have sought in the past that brought to mind mini-casinos on every corner.

"...House Bill 1153, authored by Rep. Dennis Tyler, D-Muncie, specifically authorizes bars and taverns to conduct Type II gambling, which is highlighted by pull tabs.

"...Pull-tab distributors describe them as small paper games of chance used for profit-making or fundraising.

"...Other gambling that could be offered under the legislation includes punchboards and tip boards. A punchboard is a card or board that contains a grid or section that hides the random opportunity to win a prize based on the results of punching a single section to reveal a symbol or prize amount.

"...Gov. Mitch Daniels even said he's not necessarily against expanding legalized gambling. He just refuses to ignore illegal gambling while he is in office..."
