Indiana Governor-Elect Want Commission Members to Resign

7 January 2005

INDIANA – As reported by the Indianapolis Star: "On the same day lawmakers quizzed state officials for two hours on the French Lick casino deal, Gov.-elect Mitch Daniels said he, too, wants to review the decision to let Donald Trump's gambling company run the casino.

"In addition, Daniels wants the seven members of the Indiana Gaming Commission, which oversees the regulation of casinos, to submit their resignations. He said he may not accept them all, but he wants to make his own picks for that board.

"…Gaming Commission Executive Director Glenn Lawrence said his board can review a company's deal at any time, and if Trump's gambling company fails to come up with the money, the commission can reopen the selection process.

"Daniels will get to appoint his own director of the Gaming Commission. But it's not as easy for him to remove the commission's members, who serve fixed, three-year terms.

"If the commissioners don't voluntarily step aside, Alderman will sponsor legislation to remove all commission members so Daniels can appoint his own. He said he expects that bill to pass."
