Indiana County Casino Revenue to Fund Tax Relief

CROWN POINT, Indiana – As reported by the Indiana Post-Tribune: " — A plan to save thousands of Lake County taxpayers millions of dollars got the go-ahead Tuesday, but not before critics questioned the fairness and legality of the state program.

"The Lake County Council voted to use casino revenue to locally fund Gov. Joe Kernan's one-time tax relief plan, which caps property taxes at 2 percent of a home's assessed value.

"Councilman Larry Blanchard, R-Crown Point, voted against the plan, which would use a $15.3 million loan from the state Property Tax Relief fund to provide tax credits for Lake County homeowners this year, then pay it back over five years using casino boat money…"
