Indiana considers legalizing pull-tabs

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- As reported by the Louisville Kentucky Courier: "It used to be easy to gamble at the Marengo Tavern in Crawford County.

"Customers could play electronic games like Cherry Masters or buy paper pull-tabs at the bar. A few times the place got busted, forcing owner Tony Main to pay fines.

"...Now, the Indiana General Assembly is considering legislation that would allow the Marengo Tavern to bring back at least some of its gambling business -- this time legally.

"House Bill 1153 would permit bars to sell paper pull-tabs and conduct small-stakes gambling -- just as state law allows for nonprofit fraternal and veterans' groups. The bill passed the House 62-36 and the Senate Appropriations Committee is expected to vote this week.

"...The debate comes as Kentucky lawmakers are considering whether to legalize high-stakes gambling in casinos, something Indiana did 15 years ago. But unlike in Kentucky, where the discussion is largely about producing revenue for the state budget, Indiana's conversation is largely about helping bars stay afloat..."
