Indiana concerned over Kentucky casino plans2 April 2007INDIANA – As reported by the Louisville Courier-Journal: "Campaign promises in Kentucky are causing ripples across the Ohio River, with Clark County, Ind., officials fretting that talk of expanded gambling in the Bluegrass State will dash their hopes of attracting a riverboat casino. "While all three candidates in Kentucky's May 22 Republican primary for governor oppose the idea, most of the seven Democrats seeking their party's nod have said they'd support a referendum to allow freestanding casinos and slot machines at racetracks. "If the idea gets enough momentum, says gaming analyst Jason Pawlina, it could doom chances for a casino just across the river in Clark County, where voters in November passed a referendum to allow a riverboat. "…Jeffersonville City Councilman John Perkins, a leader of Clark County's efforts to attract a casino, agreed that expanded gambling has momentum in Kentucky. But he views that only as potential competition -- not a showstopper for Clark's efforts…" |
