Indiana community leaders view casino as a "threat"2 March 2009FORT WAYNE, Indiana -- As reported by Indiana's NewsCenter: "Area business, community, and religious leaders are calling a Fort Wayne casino a 'threat to the community.' "The response comes at the heels of Mayor Tom Henry's request for a citywide referendum on the issue of gambling in the Summit City. "Organizers of 'Say No to CasiNO Coalition' argue there will be an increase in social deterioration if gambling is allowed. "'We're urging people to let their legislators know they do not want this to be a part of any bill,' said Say No to Casino Coalition Chairmen Steve Jones. 'We don't want it slipped into a bill near the end of the session here so that it's foisted upon us.' "So they're kicking off an e-mail and phone campaign to local lawmakers, in what they say will result in thousands of phone calls to legislators. "Organizers say an increase in crime, poverty, and addiction will spread throughout the community. They say the casino industry is failing and Fort Wayne should avoid the business..." |
