Indiana casinos fear smoking ban

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- As reported by the Indianapolis Star: "If Indiana passes a comprehensive workplace smoking ban, bars will close, casino revenues will plummet and people will lose jobs. That, at least, is what opponents of the bill argue.

"But the experience of other states that have passed similar legislation suggests those concerns are largely overblown. Many studies suggest that the impact of statewide bans, at least for bars and restaurants, is minimal.

"Such studies are little solace to those in Indiana's bar and casino industries. They firmly believe that passing a bill here would deal a heavy blow.

"...Casino supporters also fear a ban, noting that a smoke-free workplace law in Illinois led to a 20 percent decline in revenue.

"...For casinos, however, the picture might be more grim.

"One study found that revenues at racetrack casinos declined by about 15 percent in the first 18 months after a smoking ban was enacted..."
