Indiana Casino Revenue to Relieve Rising Property Taxes

CROWN POINT, Indiana – As reported by the Indiana Post-Tribune: " — County casino money should be used to deflate residents' ballooning property tax bills, county commissioners said Wednesday.

"The three-member board unanimously endorsed motions recommending roughly $17 million the county collects annually from casinos in the area be earmarked for property tax relief.

"Commissioner Rudy Clay, D-Gary, argued senior citizens on fixed incomes should get first crack at the funds, as they are especially poorly-equipped to deal with higher taxes in the wake of the county property reassessment.

"…Commissioners Gerry Scheub, D-Schererville, and Frances DuPey, D-Hammond, pointed out other Lake County residents will also have a hard time making the higher payments…"
