Indiana casino foes fight changes

FRENCH LICK, Indiana – As reported by the Bedford Times-Mail: "Any move to open the state legislation that allowed for a casino in Orange County will be met by grass-roots opposition and by resistance from local elected leaders.

"If such legislation is introduced, it will carry the intent of ensuring that more casino-related dollars filter back to Paoli and Orleans.

"The Historic Hotels Preservation Commission, formed three years ago to serve as the local panel needed to work toward the opening of a casino, voted Wednesday to also fight off legislative changes to the casino bill. A vote by the panel has paved the way for it to engage a professional lobbyist, if necessary, to counter proposed changes.

"The most likely advocate for opening the legislation, however, has been State Rep. Jerry Denbo, D-French Lick. Denbo, a member of the HHPC advisory council, said at the December meeting he may propose a change to the bill, in the interest of seeking more money for Orleans and Paoli and in getting representatives from the two communities seated on the HHPC.

"…The five-member HHPC, as well as local citizens gathered for Wednesday's meeting, expressed their support for the Local Development Agreement, which already is in place for determining how casino-related dollars are allocated to Orleans and Paoli…"
