Indiana Casino Boats May Drop Crew7 February 2005INDIANAPOLIS -- Riverboat casinos might get to dump the captains and crews that cost them about $1 million annually if they are willing to help pay to move 120 state police officers from gaming enforcement to traditional duties. "That's a plan state Rep. Bob Alderman, R-Fort Wayne, said he will propose in the coming weeks to the Public Policy Committee he leads. "…Alderman's plan combines the desire of new Gov. Mitch Daniels to get state troopers off the boats and back to the policing they originally signed up for with some of the casinos' financial interest in eliminating ship captains and other crew who -- at many boats -- have little role because the boats no longer cruise. "…Under Alderman's plan, the gaming commission would create its own enforcement division and would be prohibited from using state police for audits, background checks or duties on the boats. "Alderman's plan would send the 120 state police officers currently working with the gaming commission back to highway patrols, investigations or other traditional duties…" |
