Indiana businesses may sue over crackdown

FRANKFORT, Indiana -- As reported by the Indianapolis Star: "Business owners whose livelihood depends in part on video gambling machines say they may sue the state over a crackdown on the devices that they say is unconstitutional.

"A state law that took effect July 1 steps up enforcement against video gambling machines sometimes found in bars and gas stations by providing 16 extra officers to go after the devices, sometimes called 'Cherry Masters.'

"...A group called the Fair Gaming Committee is asking clubs and businesses statewide to join a legal fight against the law, which it says is unconstitutional because it allows game machines only in state-licensed casinos and race tracks.

"...The group wants a state-regulated system, perhaps modeled after one in Illinois in which business owners pay an annual fee to provide electronic gambling.

"Clinton County prosecutor Anthony Sommer said the previous law caused confusion about what was and wasn't legal..."
