Indian Canyons to re-open Nov. 18

15 November 2013

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians is pleased to announce it will re-open the Indian Canyons on Monday, Nov. 18 at 8 a.m.

The Tribe closed the Canyons on Sept. 5 after heavy flood damage from flash floods caused extensive damage. Fast moving water from the heavy rains carried down trees, boulders, and mud damaging trails, roads and access to portions of the Indian Canyons.

"Repairs to our roads and trails are nearly complete," Tribal chairman Jeff L. Grubbe said. "We are pleased to be able to re-open this beautiful area to the public before the holidays."

Crews from various agencies have been involved with the Tribe in repairing the damaged areas. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians appreciates the following agencies who have helped with the flood damage response: Ramona Redhawks Fire Crew, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Burn Area Emergency Response Team and Cal-Fire Oak Glen.

The Canyons, an approximate 56-square mile area that includes more than 60 miles of trails, attract more than 125,000 visitors a year to enjoy the scenic trails, plants, wildlife and cultural sites. Palm Canyon is considered the world's largest oasis of California Fan Palms.

The Canyons were also closed temporarily earlier this year when more than 6,000 acres burned on the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians reservation during the Mountain Fire in July.

The world-renowned Canyons are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and are the ancestral home of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.
