Illinois Village May Vote on Gambling Expansion2 March 2004ILLINOIS – As reported by the Daily Southtown: "Crestwood voters soon will get the chance to vote on how much leeway village leaders should have in expanding gambling venues. "A nonbinding referendum on the March 16 ballot will ask whether a special election should precede any increase in gaming options — which could be anything from video poker to a full-blown casino. "…Even though the south suburbs are out of the running for the state's 10th casino license, leaders from the group that spearheaded the referendum said reaction from area politicians has only made their question more crucial. "…The ballot measure already has seen its share of controversy. Late last month, Crestwood's local election board changed the wording of the question so that it would only apply to a new casino. "…After the anti-gambling group discovered the change and threatened to sue, the village quickly reverted to the original question. Concerned Citizens of Crestwood had gathered more than 700 signatures to place the question on the ballot…" |
