Illinois Senators Considering Gambling Expansion Again

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – As reported by the Quad City Times: "Illinois senators could be mulling another move to expand gambling in the state, a key lawmaker said Tuesday.

"Sen. Denny Jacobs, D-East Moline, who would sponsor the proposal, said the expansion would create two new casino licenses and allow slot machines at racing tracks — as well as increase the number of gaming positions on riverboats.

"…Last year, [Governor Rod] Blagojevich torpedoed a gambling expansion that would have been used to shore up a $5 billion budget deficit. The governor also refuses to increase the sales or income taxes. Now lawmakers are struggling with a $1.8 billion to $3.7 billion budget deficit.

"…Jacobs, who chairs the senate's gaming committee, estimates his proposal would bring in an additional $1.1 billion in the first year and about $500 million in later years…"
