Illinois Schools Wary of Casino Money15 December 2004ILLINOIS – As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times: "The Ho-Chunk Nation is in the giving spirit this holiday season, but leaders at a south suburban school are at odds over whether to take the present. "The American Indian tribe that hopes to build a casino in Lynwood wants to give Sandridge Elementary School $20,000, but the donation is being tied up by worries that accepting it would be akin to an endorsement of gambling. "…Others on the school board see the Ho-Chunk cash as key to improving a school starving for funds and aiming to improve its programs. Ho-Chunk already is a business owner in Lynwood, they say, having recently bought baseball fields and a large sports and exposition center. "…The debate could kick up a notch tonight. John Dall, a Chicago resident and Ho-Chunk legislator, will attend a 6 p.m. Sandridge PTA meeting to present a $20,000 check to the PTA. A school board meeting follows at 7:30 p.m., though the donation is not on the agenda…" |
