Illinois legislators debate expanded gambling

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois -- As reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "The next round in Illinois government's continuing brawl begins this week, as legislators return to Springfield to debate politically charged state budget cuts and a controversial proposal to expand gambling.

"At stake are hundreds of millions of dollars worth of street repairs and other local projects around the state that Gov. Rod Blagojevich cut from the budget in order to fund his new health care initiatives — and, many allege, to punish specific enemies in the Legislature.

"Also on the table is a major gambling expansion measure that would allow the Casino Queen, the Argosy Casino at Alton and other gambling venues to increase their capacity. It would raise funds for a massive state infrastructure program, but anti-gambling critics say it would extract other societal costs..."
