Illinois Governor May Expand Gambling27 August 2004CHICAGO, Illinois – As reported by the Associated Press: "Gov. Rod Blagojevich has said he is close to filling a vacancy on the Illinois Gaming Board and he would consider expanding gambling to balance the state budget. "But Blagojevich said lawmakers would have to agree to necessary budget cuts before he would consider an expansion proposal. He added that any new casinos would have to boost an economically depressed area and not 'fundamentally alter the landscape of the state.' "…Blagojevich also told the Chicago Tribune editorial board on Thursday that his office has tried unsuccessfully to halt the board's efforts to put a riverboat casino in suburban Rosemont while he considers naming replacements for Chairman Elzie Higginbottom and member Violet Clark.
