Illinois' Casinos, Tracks Could Buy Slots

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times: "The state's nine riverboat casinos and five horse racetracks would gain the right to buy 20,000 new slot machines under a deal floated Wednesday by Senate President Emil Jones (D-Chicago) to inject a projected $580 million into state coffers.

"During a busy legislative day at the Capitol, lawmakers also defeated a proposal that would make it more difficult for juries to impose the death penalty and sent to Gov. Blagojevich a compromise measure dealing with late-term abortions.

"Jones' gambling plan came to light during the second straight day of closed-door negotiations between the General Assembly's leaders and Blagojevich as they rush to close a $1 billion-plus hole in the state's budget…"
