Illinois Casino Grants Doled Out

ILLINOIS – As reported by the Chicago Tribune: "Programs aimed at improving literacy in Kane County received high marks Thursday from a special County Board subcommittee seeking to dole out more than $1 million in riverboat grants to 36 public and private agencies.

"The recommendations by the Riverboat Grant Subcommittee are the first under a more formal process for awarding and tracking grants adopted in 2005 by the board. The more stringent guidelines for distributing the annual profit-sharing allocation to the county from the Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin were adopted after a county audit found lax monitoring in the previous program. The audit did not find any abuse of the program or misappropriation of the more than $80 million in grants the county had doled out since 1997.

"…'It's difficult to argue that one [application] is better than another. Everyone who applied is worthy,' said subcommittee chairman John Hoscheit (R-St.Charles).

"…Among the agencies recommended for full funding were Friends of Aurora after School, the Aurora Primary Care Consortium, the Quad County Urban League, the Tri-City Health Partnership, Community Crisis Center, the YWCA of Elgin, Literacy Foundation, Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley, and Girl Scouts of America Fox Valley Council…"
