Illinois candidates debate gambling issues

ILLINOIS – As reported by the Illinois Daily Herald: "One of the major issues of the Illinois gubernatorial race is gambling.

"It is also a hot topic in local races, such as the 53rd House District, which pits Democratic challenger Michael MacDonald against Republican incumbent Sidney Mathias.

"MacDonald said he favors a 10th casino, estimating it would generate about $70 million annually, based on the revenue brought in by the nine existing casinos.

"MacDonald, a retired engineer who lives in Buffalo Grove, said he would favor locating the casino in Chicago.

"…As for Republican gubernatorial candidate Judy Baar Topinka's plan to add gaming positions at each of the nine existing casinos, MacDonald said he does not see a need for it.

"…Mathias, a Buffalo Grove attorney and former village president, said he is philosophically opposed to an expansion of gambling.

"However, he does not believe that using the existing 10th casino license, which has been tied up in litigation for years, constitutes such an expansion…"
