Illinois Candidate Proposed Chicago Casino23 August 2006ILLINOIS – As reported by the Chicago Tribune: "Republican governor candidate Judy Baar Topinka called today for the creation of a Chicago casino as the centerpiece of her four-year revenue plan for the state, contending it would generate billions of dollars to help fund schools and provide property-tax relief. "The Republican candidate's reliance on the politically volatile issue of gambling was new evidence of just how reluctant politicians are to risk angering voters with the idea of raising taxes. "Topinka said her revenue plan was more realistic and sustaining than a proposal offered by Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Blagojevich has proposed the sale or lease of the lottery to pump billions of dollars up front into education, though his plan has received only tepid support in the Democratic-controlled legislature. "…Topinka contended her plan would not be an expansion of gambling, largely opposed by her fellow Republicans, because it would use the state's only unused casino license for Chicago. "Gambling proposals for Chicago have been raised by many of the state's top politicians, including previous Republican governors and Democratic Mayor Richard M. Daley, but have never succeeded…" |
