Illinois bingo agreement passes county board28 February 2008ILLINOIS -- As reported by the MidWeek News: "In what was a surprise to some, only eight members of the 24-member DeKalb County Board voted against an agreement with the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Feb. 20. "That agreement outlines responsibilities for both the Nation and the county regarding a government center and electronic bingo operation on 128 acres the Prairie Band bought near Shabbona for $8.8 million. "However, if the National Indian Gaming Commission decides the land and the entire 1,280 acres near Shabbona is not a reservation, the operation would be shut down. County Board Chairman Ruth Anne Tobias has said she doesn't expect the NIGC to make a determination before 2009. "...Prairie Band leader Rey Kitchkumme indicated after the meeting he will begin a process with County Planner Paul Miller to plan for buildings on the site. The plans will have to be consistent with county zoning, building codes and safety requirements, Miller said..." |
