Illinois Advisor Holds Stake in Casino Process

ILLINOIS – As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times: "A key fund-raiser and adviser to Gov. Blagojevich quietly has held an interest in land that could be developed into a lucrative hotel should the state's last available casino license end up in Rosemont.

"After a Chicago Sun-Times inquiry, developer and restaurateur Antoin 'Tony' Rezko said late Friday through a spokesman he has no plans to build a hotel on the Rosemont site and thought he had let an option to lease the land from the village expire in March 2003.

"But an attorney representing Rosemont said the 'lease and development agreement' remains in effect.

"…The arrangement raises questions because another Blagojevich fund-raiser and adviser, Christopher G. Kelly, was called in by the governor early last year to try to end the stalemate surrounding the casino license -- an effort that could have benefitted Rezko by finally getting a casino in Rosemont.

"While the governor's office denies there was any trading of inside information, critics say the appearance is troubling enough…"
