Illegal US Gambling Ring Busted14 January 2005NEW YORK -- As reported by the Agence France Presse: "US federal prosecutors said they had broken a multi-million dollar illegal gambling and horse doping ring, run by three men with links to the Gambino crime family. "Under an indictment unsealed Thursday, a total of 17 people were charged with operating a business that, over the last four years, brokered more than 200 million dollars in bets on horse racing and other sporting events. "In addition to multiple gambling-related and money laundering counts, the indictment charged several defendants with participating in a scheme to fix a horse race at the Aqueduct raceway in New York by administering a performance-enhancing drug to one of the runners..." |
