Hundreds of Thoroughbreds Killed After Racing Halted in Beijing

CHINA -- As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: "About 600 Thoroughbreds have been killed after racing in Beijing was discontinued in October, Racing Post reports.

"The killings included 400 Thoroughbreds in training and 200 mares from a population exceeding 2,000. They were administered lethal injections.

"Kevin Connolly, racing director at Beijing racecourse, confirmed some of the killings but said they were not out of line with the typical end-of-season practice of culling.

"...With the communist government frowning on pari-mutuel wagering, the Beijing Tongshun Jockey Club has been an on-again off-again proposition in the 21st century..."
