Hundreds of Atlantic City Workers Return to Work7 October 2004ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Six days into the casino-workers strike, some union members have put down their placards and returned to work as the casino-hotel strike drags into Day 7. There has been no recent movement to settle the contract dispute that has 10,000 workers off the job at seven casinos. "Officials on both sides of the dispute said Wednesday that some members are returning to work now. "Local 54 President Robert McDevitt said the number of picket-line crossers is relatively small, 'probably around 5 percent.' "McDevitt chided them for abandoning the union. "…Addressing picket-line crossers is a delicate balancing act for both sides. Local 54 is reminding workers of the benefits of union solidarity, but is legally barred from threatening members to stay on strike. The casino companies have been placing ads in The Press of Atlantic City informing employees of their legal rights, but cannot openly encourage them to cross the line. "…While exact numbers were not available, McDevitt's rough estimate suggests that about 500 members have crossed the picket line…" |
