How Gambling Lures Kids

CANADA – As reported by the Montreal Gazette: ``He's 16, maybe he smokes cigarettes or drinks a bit too much. He uses his lunch money to buy scratch tickets at the dépanneur, or skips school because he owes somebody money after losing at cards.

He's excitable, with not much self-discipline, and after a while, his grades drop and relationships wither. Then he starts taking money from his family, even selling things, so he can finance his gambling.

``This composite, provided by McGill University's International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviours, also points out that money is not the reason for gambling.

``...Starting to gamble at a young age means launching yourself on the proverbial slippery slope.

``Because while clients who see gambling counsellor Sol Boxenbaum are generally adults, 'when we trace their behaviours,' he says, 'the onset age is about 9.'

``It can be so easy, mainly because adolescents report these three predominant reasons for gambling: the excitement, the enjoyment and to win money.

``There is help for gambling youth, since one of the most comprehensive programs is located right here in Montreal.
