House shoots down bill allowing Port Huron, Romulus casinos

WASHINGTON -- As reported the Detroit Free Press: "The U.S. House defeated a bill today that would have allowed new Indian casinos in Port Huron and Romulus, after a fiery debate among Michigan's congressional delegation.

"By a vote of 121-298, the House rejected the plan authorizing land swaps for the Sault Ste. Marie tribe of Chippewa Indians and the Bay Mills Indian Community for tracts near metro Detroit.

"...Proponents argued that the bill would provide much-needed jobs while endorsing an agreement backed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm and her predecessor Republican Gov. John Engler.

"...But opponents, led by Detroit Rep. John Conyers, called the bill an unprecedented expansion of Indian gambling far beyond the boundaries of tribal lands, and questioned the validity of their claims..."
