Horse racing standards, regulations get support

CHICAGO, Illinois -- As reported by MarketWatch: "The likelihood is growing that U.S. horse racing will be the subject of an attempt to impose some form of mandatory, standardized regulation following a congressional hearing Thursday that found some support for the idea among many, though by no means all, of the industry representatives on hand.

"The Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection is probing whether the industry has in place sufficient, consistent standards to minimize inbreeding, doping and other practices that could contribute to injuries. It was prompted by the death of Eight Belles, the filly who broke down and had to be euthanized minutes after finishing second in the Kentucky Derby. That tragedy followed two other high-profile deaths, those of 2006 Derby winner Barbaro and two-time European champ George Washington, put down after getting hurt in the 2007 Breeders Cup Classic last November.

"Those injuries all happened at different tracks and in different states, each of which has its own set of regulations, leading to widespread calls for nationwide standards.

"...One first step -- and something that enjoys almost unanimous support -- is for a central database that would keep track of injuries and deaths..."
