Hopis to Vote on Winslow-Area Casino11 May 2004ARIZONA -- As reported by the Arizona Sun: ``Members of the Hopi Tribe will have to choose between building a casino or not building a casino when they vote on gaming next week. ``A third option to lease all of its allocated slot machines to other tribes has been dropped from consideration, according to Hopi spokeswoman Vanessa Charles. The Hopi Nation heads to the polls as the last tribe in Arizona to enter the 2002 voter-approved Proposition 202 gaming compact. ``The tribe will vote on the yes or no special referendum ballot on May 19, a day after city elections. ``…The casino would be located on tribal trust land outside of Winslow, and near Interstate 40. Charles said there would be no target date for opening the casino, should the measure pass, but most tribes have opened similar-sized casinos in 14 to 18 months. The proposal suggests…" |
