Hope for Texas casino games1 June 2007TEXAS -- As reported by the American-Statesman: "The Legislature spent the past five months shutting out casino gambling in Texas, but the federal government has cracked open the door for Las Vegas-style games, except slots, in a remote part of the state. "The U.S. Department of Interior gave preliminary approval last week for the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas to expand gambling at its Eagle Pass reservation. "The decision is a milestone in the tribe's 12-year trek through state and federal regulation, as well as the courts, to affirm the Kickapoo's contention that they can offer more than poker and bingo at their casino. "The trek, however, is far from over. The tribe must resume negotiations with Interior Department officials about the details of regulating the games. "...Still, tribe Chairman Juan Garza Jr. said the 500-member tribe is delighted with the federal decision..." |
