Hong Kong Liberals Proposal Casino

HONG KONG – As reported by the China Standard: "If Hong Kong's Liberal Party gets its way - and the cat would truly be among the pigeons if it does - some gamblers' trips are going to be a lot shorter. The Liberals want to build European-style tourist-only casinos on Lantau Island.

"The proposal, designed to lure more tourists to Hong Kong, was made on Monday when party members met Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa to discuss his coming policy address.

"…Perhaps to deflect the wrath of the fast-growing Macau gaming industry, Liberal Party chief James Tien stressed that only toursts would be admitted to Lantau casinos should the government agree with the idea.

"…Selina Chow, the party's vice-chairwoman, said the tourist sector would support such a proposal as it would provide jobs for Hong Kong residents.

"She said she doesn't think it would worsen the problem of pathological gambling in Hong Kong because of the tourist-only proviso…"
