Ho-Chunk Nation President Defends Finances

WISCONSIN – As reported by the Wisconsin State Journal: "As a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, Madison resident Joel Thundercloud is embarrassed and angry that the tribe last year rang up an estimated $104 million deficit -- overspending about $16,250 for every man, woman and child -- while running one of the nation's most profitable casinos.

"Ho-Chunk Nation President George Lewis acknowledges the tribe last year depleted its cash reserves to a dangerously low level of about $6 million, even as flawed budgeting practices failed to completely account for revenue and expenditures.

"…Lewis promises the tribe will take in more than it spends this year and defends his record against tribal critics, who complain about the deficit and a recent 30-percent reduction in the tribe's quarterly payments to members…"
