Ho-Chunk Casino Opponents Call it Quits

ILLINOIS – As reported by the Northwest Indiana Times: "Opponents of a planned Ho-Chunk casino in Lynwood are calling for supporters to raise the white flag in light of recent changes to state law making approval for American Indian gaming more difficult.

"'It seems like it's the end of the line,' said Carl Smits, president of the group Citizens For Our Community, which has spearheaded opposition to the proposed 432-acre casino and resort. 'Now that the Legislature's taken a stand, it's time to say 'enough is enough,' Smits said.

"The Native American Gaming Act recently sailed through both houses of the Illinois General Assembly, overriding an earlier veto by Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The act requires the governor to submit a request and receive legislative approval before entering into a compact with an American Indian tribe.

"…For opponents of the casino, the changes to the law essentially represent the final nail in the coffin for a Ho-Chunk casino in Lynwood…"
