Hit-Run Suspect's Gamble

NEW YORK -- As reported by Newsday: ``After hitting and killing a man on the Upper East Side with a stolen sport utility vehicle, Gurpreet Oberoi hopped a bus to Atlantic City and spent the next day at the casinos before he was coaxed back to New York City to surrender yesterday, police said.

``About 11:45 p.m. Saturday, Oberoi, 26, was with two friends in the green 1999 Chevrolet Suburban that he reportedly stole from his father two months ago. The group was heading to Atlantic City to gamble when Oberoi struck Peter Hornbeck, 26, as he tried to cross Park Avenue at 96th Street, police said.

``Hornbeck, a manager at a TriBeCa bakery and aspiring high school teacher, was dragged for a block by the 5,200-pound SUV, according to police. He died at the scene.

``…Although his two friends were too upset to continue their planned gambling trip, police said Oberoi made his way to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, where he hopped a bus to Atlantic City, police said.

``…Hours after the accident, Oberoi's two friends walked into the 34th Precinct in Washington Heights and told detectives that they had been in the vehicle that struck Hornbeck. They also told the cops where Oberoi was…"
