Heated Debate Over Illinois Casino Proposal

ILLINOIS – As reported by the Star: "Country Club Hills Mayor Dwight Welch and Ald. Steven Burris, 4th Ward, Monday exchanged heated words over Burris' motives to put gambling in the city up for a vote.

"The exchange occurred at Monday's council meeting when Burris asked to delete a section from the May 23 meeting minutes.

"At that meeting, Burris made a motion to place a referendum question on the ballot seeking voters' input about opening a casino in Country Club Hills.

"The motion failed and the floor was opened to the public when resident Clifton Grahmn thanked Burris for his motion. Welch's response to Grahmn is what Burris asked to delete from the minutes.

"According to the minutes, Welch said Ald. Burris (previously) had supported the casino in Country Club Hills and 'had suggested the city hire his uncle, former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris, as a casino lobbyist for the city.'

"…Roland Burris now is a lobbyist for the proposed Ho Chunk casino in Lynwood.

"By motioning for a referendum question, Welch said by phone Tuesday, Ald. Burris thinks Country Club Hills will not get the casino…"
