Harrah's Wants Bigger Hotel19 August 2005LOUISIANA – As reported by the Louisiana Times-Picayune: "Four years after winning a concession from the Louisiana Legislature to operate a 450-room hotel,which is only months away from opening, Harrah's New Orleans Casino is looking for more. "The Canal Street casino, where business has been grow rapidly, has told the Greater New Orleans Hotel and Lodging Association that it wants to lift or lighten the restrictions on the number of hotel rooms it can operate. "Although Harrah's 450-room tower on Fulton Street is expected to open early next year, Harrah's executives say the new hotel won't be enough to house its visitors. "…Eddie Jacobs, president of the Greater New Orleans Hotel and Lodging Association, said that the issue will be raised at the group's September board meeting. "…To some, news that Harrah's wants more hotel room is merely the latest expression of the company's alleged pattern of getting a foot in the door and coming back for more. "…However, Harrah's has said for a while that it would need more than 450 hotel rooms. "…Harrah's houses its guests in 15 downtown hotels. The casino has contracts with major hotels such as the Sheraton, the W, the Windsor Court, the Hilton New Orleans Riverside and the Wyndham Canal Place to buy rooms at reduced rates for its customers. Because Harrah's doesn't have its own hotel, the casino has come up with some creative ways to make its guests feel at home…" |
