Harrah's closing New Orleans casino because of Gustav

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana -- Harrah's Entertainment said it was closing its Harrah's New Orleans casino at 2 p.m. CDT today because of Hurricane Gustav. Company spokesman Gary Thompson said it was unclear how long the casino, Louisiana's largest and only land-based casino, would remain closed.

Thompson said the company did not yet have plans to close the Grand Casino in Biloxi, Miss.

The closing of Harrah's New Orleans was not ordered by the city, but a precaution taken by the casino operator.

"It give our employees a chance to make plans if they wish to evacuate the area," Thompson said.

Damage in New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 kept Harrahâ's New Orleans closed for almost seven months.

The property is located near the French Quarter in downtown New Orleans. This morning, Boyd Gaming Corp. closed the Treasure Chest Casino because the potential hurricane.
