Gulfstream joins legal battle29 November 2007FLORIDA -- As reported by the South Florida Sun Sentinel: "Arguing its future rests on heading off a proposed Indian gambling compact, Gulfstream Park asked Wednesday to join a landmark court case that may determine the limits of a governor's power and set the course for Florida's gambling industry. "In their motion to the Florida Supreme Court, attorneys for the Hallandale Beach racetrack and casino paint a gloomy picture for Gulfstream, the racing industry and ultimately taxpayers if Gov. Charlie Crist's gambling agreement with the Seminole Tribe is approved. "Gulfstream argues that it and other horse-related industries contribute $3 billion to Florida's economy and employ thousands of people. Those jobs, and subsequent property taxes and state taxes, could be lost if the tribe gains exclusive rights to operate blackjack and other games, the motion says..." |
