Gulfport Entertainment-Gaming District Created3 March 2006MISSISSIPPI – As reported by the Biloxi Sun Herald: "Rick Carter, co-owner of Gulfside Casino Partnership, left Thursday's Planning Commission meeting with a look of relief after moving one step closer to building a casino on land. "After discussing the issue for more than an hour, the Gulfport Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend the City Council amend the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance and the zoning map to create an entertainment-gaming district. Seven of the 11 members were present. "…The proposed district would include land between 30th and 36th avenues, north of U.S. 90 and south of 11th Street. "Carter and Terry Green, co-owners of the Copa Casino before Hurricane Katrina, need the change to proceed with plans to build a casino on land currently occupied by the Oasis Hotel. "…Even though Gulfport had two casinos before Katrina and state law now allows on-shore gaming, the City Council must rezone the area. Both casinos operated out of an industrial area owned by the state port and city ordinance currently allows casinos south of U.S. 90 only…" |
