Guggenheim Opens Two Museums in Vegas5 October 2001LAS VEGAS, Nevada –– As reported by the Associated Press: “Fine art and chrome collide with slot machines and neon Sunday when the Guggenheim opens two museums at the Venetian hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip. ”The warehouse-like 63,700-square-foot Guggenheim Las Vegas Museum is debuting with `The Art of the Motorcycle,’ an exhibit featuring more than 125 motorcycles displayed on chrome surfaces. ”The exhibition, installed by architect Frank Gehry, explores the motorcycle as both a cultural icon and design achievement from the first motorized bicycle to the most current model. ”…Members of the celebrity-filled Guggenheim Motorcycle Club roared into the city to take part in the Thursday festivities. Included were actors Dennis Hopper, Jeremy Irons and Lauren Hutton, who was critically injured Oct. 21, 2000, on the club's last motorcycle ride in Nevada. ”In the much more intimate Hermitage Guggenheim Museum, nicknamed the Jewel Box, visitors will be able to take in `Masterpieces and Master Collectors: Impressionist and Early Modern Paintings,’ which features 45 masterpieces from both Russia's State Hermitage Museum and various Guggenheim museums, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Claude Monet. ”…The exhibit from the late 19th and early 20th centuries has an appraised value of more than $2 billion.
