Guam voters reject slots

GUAM -- As reported by the Pacific Daily News: "The majority of Guam voters in yesterday's election shut the door on slot-machine gambling for the second time in a little more than a year.

"Based on preliminary election results, Proposal A was overwhelming rejected -- 5,777 'No' votes and 3,485 'Yes' votes after the ballots from 32 of 54 polling precincts were counted just after 11 p.m.

"...Proposal A would have allowed slot machines at Guam Greyhound Park. Attorney Jay Arriola, spokesman for the anti-slots group Lina'la Sin Casino, said many island voters went to the polls to make sure their vote against gambling would count.

"...Though the voter turnout was lighter compared to the typically huge crowds at the polls during general elections on Guam, Arriola said many residents still made time 'vote down this initiative.'..."
