Guam Voters Reject Casino Proposal4 November 2004GUAM – As reported by the China Standard: "Voters on the Pacific island of Guam overwhelmingly rejected a proposal Tuesday to allow the opening of up to 10 casinos. "According to unofficial tallies reported by Guam media outlets, voters in the United States territory voted against the proposal by a margin of about 60 per cent to 40 per cent. Though still a clear defeat, the proposal garnered significantly more support than a 1996 referendum on the issue. "Jay Merrill, a spokesman for proposal sponsors Citizens for Economic Diversity, said his group will continue a court fight started before the vote to hold a special election on the issue. "…Tuesday's vote was nearly postponed because the island's election commission failed to mail out the full 80-page casino proposal to each registered voter as required by law, instead sending only a one-page summary as no funding had been allocated by the legislature for distribution. "…Merrill said that because of the dispute and uncertainty over whether the vote would count, many voters skipped over the referendum question on their ballot Tuesday…" |
