Guam Visitors Split on Casinos25 August 2004GUAM – As reported by the Guam Pacific Daily News: "Japanese visitors polled in recent months are split on whether they favor casino gambling on Guam, although a number of them said they wouldn't stay at a hotel with a casino. "Those were the results of exit surveys conducted by Market Research & Development Inc. for the Guam Visitors Bureau, which funded the survey. "GVB General Manager Tony Lamorena said that there is no conflict of interest in allowing Market Research to conduct the surveys. Jay Merrill, chairman of Market Research, also is a consultant for Citizens for Economic Diversity, which is pushing for legalized casino gambling. "Merrill's firm has been contracted to conduct GVB's exit surveys for some time now, Lamorena said, and the gaming-related questions were added to the normal surveys the firm routinely conducts. "…In the months of March, April and June, a huge percentage of visitors polled would have chosen hotels without casinos. "In March, Japanese visitors were split on whether they favor casinos in hotels on Guam. Out of 397 tourists, 29 percent they were in favor, while 30 percent said they opposed, 35 percent said they weren't sure and 6 percent didn't know. "But in April and June, a larger percentage of about 400 visitors said they favor hotel casinos on Guam. In April, 32 percent of visitors favored gaming, while 22 percent opposed it…" |
