Guam: Prop B rivals debate at forum

GUAM -- As reported by the Pacific Daily News: "In a little more than two weeks, Guam voters will decide: Would slot machines help to solve the island's funding woes for education and health care, or would the machines do more harm than good to the local community?

"The two sides of Proposal B, which would legalize slot machines at the Guam Greyhound racetrack, had another opportunity to make a case for their opposing stances at a forum yesterday. The Guam Hotel and Restaurant Association hosted yesterday's forum at the Onward Beach Resort.

"...Proposal B's numbers add up to about $12 million in gross slot revenues a year. And based on the proposal's 10-percent tax, the local government would then collect $1.2 million, based on the proposal to target tourists, rather than local residents.

" Anderson repeated what Proposal B's paid advertisements state: That the slots would help the local government get additional cash for such needs as books for classrooms and prescription drugs for seniors.

"...But No on Proposal B spokeswoman Jackie Marati cautioned the community to be careful.

"'Proposal B is a Trojan horse; a gift to the community (that brings with it) many ills,' she said..."
